Performance monitoring with Dynatrace
With a user experience report.
Dynatrace is the market leader in APM (Application Performance Monitoring). This tool supports Load and Performance tests by recording important performance indicators and determining relevant load models.
Dynatrace enables us as the biggest trading platform in Germany to monitor performance-critical applications.
Application performance monitoring with Dynatrace enables:
an insight into the entire processing chain
identifying performance problems
determining the causes of such problems
initiate targeted improvements and corrections
Dynatrace capture all technical transactions - in this context, transactions are defined as a sequence of operations that are only carried out completely or not at all.
The tool constantly compares response times and error rates with the learned history and thereby automatically detects deviations from the expected state.
Dynatrace has been available for performance monitoring of our third-party software since March 2021. Feedback from Dynatrace users and admins is very positive.
We would like to share the following feedback with you:
Dynatrace now allows us real-time monitoring with a clear demarcation from other applications. We've been missing that.
We can monitor and check more independently. This is partly accompanied by the fact that we have less commissioning and coordination effort with the provider.
With Dynatrace, we can determine responsibility and causes of problems more quickly and effectively, we also improve the error support for the software manufacturer.
The tool showed us a lot of potential for improvement for the first time. Problems were mostly described in a much more concrete way than before, so we can now work more specifically on the solution.
With the help of Dynatrace, we were able to identify the cause of a software error before the manufacturer could identify it. That increased the error analysis significantly accelerated and thus also the solution.
We have additional support for error analysis due to the quick creation obtained from stack traces and dumps.
We now actively use Dynatrace to document performance adjustments. We are able to provide relevant evidence and not only a clue, this will apply to load and performance tests in the future.
In addition, the tool offers the following advantages:
The dashboard in Dynatrace shows the operational status of the application components at any time. It is a useful tool that completes the tasks of a TAV’s and significantly simplifies it.
Dynatrace constantly monitors the application and alerts us about deviations. The software not only recognizes problems but also is giving us insights about problem details such as an increasing error rate. We track this information based on criticality and resource availability.
Conclusion: “The use of Dynatrace has paid off for us. We have been using the tool since it was introduced.
Features that go beyond pure support for performance tests are in particular real-time monitoring, the permanent analysis of the application as well as the opportunities for independent monitoring and testing.
Dynatrace can identify problems more quickly, and we can then follow up on the cause in a targeted manner. Due to these comprehensive functionalities, we would like to continue to rely on Dynatrace.”

Das Tool unterstützt Last- und Performance-Tests, indem es wichtige Performance-Kennzahlen erfasst und relevante Last-Modelle ermittelt.
Dynatrace ermöglicht uns als Deutsche WertpapierService Bank AG zusätzlich die Überwachung von performance-kritischen Anwendungen, deren Verfügbarkeit im Management Cockpit mit „hoch“ oder „sehr hoch“ eingestuft ist.

Dynatrace zeichnet alle technischen Transaktionen auf – Transaktionen definieren sich in diesem Kontext als eine Folge von Operationen, die nur komplett oder gar nicht durchgeführt werden.
Das Tool vergleicht Antwortzeiten und Fehlerraten permanent mit der erlernten Historie und erkennt dadurch automatisch Abweichungen vom erwarteten Zustand.
Seit März 2021 ist Dynatrace für das Performance Monitoring unserer Fremdsoftware im Einsatz. Die ersten Erfahrungen des Anwenders mit Dynatrace sind sehr positive.
Das nachfolgende Feedback möchten wir gerne mit Ihnen teilen:
Dynatrace ermöglicht uns jetzt ein Echtzeit-Monitoring mit klarer Abgrenzung zu anderen Anwendungen. Das fehlte uns bisher.
Wir können selbstständiger überwachen und prüfen. Damit geht teilweise einher, dass wir weniger Beauftragungs- und Abstimmungsaufwand mit dem Provider haben.
Durch Dynatrace können wir die Zuständigkeit und Ursachen bei Problemen schneller und klarer So verbessern wir auch den Fehlersupport für den Softwarehersteller.
Viele Verbesserungspotenziale hat uns das Tool erstmalig aufgezeigt. Bei bekannten Problemen erfolgte zumeist eine deutlich konkretere Beschreibung, als es vorher möglich war, sodass wir nun gezielter an der Lösung arbeiten können.
Mit Hilfe von Dynatrace konnte uns die Ursache eines Softwarefehlers genannt werden, noch ehe der Hersteller diese identifizieren konnte. Das hat die Fehleranalyse erheblich beschleunigt und somit auch die Lösung.
Zusätzliche Unterstützung bei der Fehleranalyse haben wir durch die schnelle Erstellung von Stacktraces und Dumps erhalten.
Wir nutzen Dynatrace nun aktiv zur Dokumentation von Performance- Anpassungen. Mit den bisherigen Mitteln konnten wir entsprechende Nachweise noch nicht führen, sodass dies künftig insbesondere für Last- und Performancetests gelten wird.
Darüber hinaus bietet das Tool folgende Vorteile:
Das Dashboard in Dynatrace zeigt jederzeit den Betriebsstatus der Anwendungskomponenten an. Es ist ein hilfreiches Werkzeug, das die Aufgaben eines TAVs deutlich vereinfacht.
Dynatrace überwacht die Anwendung permanent und alarmiert uns bei Abweichungen. Die Software erkennt dabei nicht nur Probleme, sondern auch auffällige Veränderungen, wie eine steigende Fehlerquote. Diese Informationen verfolgen wir je nach Kritikalität und Ressourcenverfügbarkeit.
Fazit: „Der Einsatz von Dynatrace hat sich für uns gelohnt. Seit Einführung des Tools nutzen wir Features, die über eine reine Unterstützungsleistung bei Performance-Tests hinausgehen.
Hier seien insbesondere das Echtzeit-Monitoring, die permanente Analyse der Anwendung sowie die Möglichkeiten zur selbstständigen Überwachung und Prüfung genannt.
Zukünftig werden wir durch Dynatrace Probleme schneller erkennen, deren Ursache wir dann zielgerichtet weiterverfolgen können. Aufgrund dieser umfassenden Funktionalitäten möchten wir auf Dynatrace weiter setzen.“
