Keeping Dynatrace Agents Up-to-Date in Locked-Down Environments

If you’ve ever worked with Dynatrace in a large enterprise, this probably sounds familiar: OneAgent and ActiveGate auto-updates are turned off, sometimes permanently.

Why Updates Get Stuck

Security, compliance, and change management teams usually insist on full manual control. Every update needs approval, testing, documentation, and a clear audit trail. That makes sense in highly regulated industries, where a minor mistake can quickly escalate into a significant issue. However, the trade-off remains painful.

Agents often sit on older versions for months, sometimes even longer. Meanwhile, security fixes, performance improvements, and new features are waiting. IT teams often spend far too much time stitching together scripts, updating hosts one by one, or chasing tickets that seem to linger forever.

We’ve been hearing this frustration from customers for a while now — especially in banking and financial services. Teams at places like East West Bank, Finabank, and Calbank appreciate what Dynatrace brings to the table in terms of observability, but keeping agents current in locked-down environments has been a constant source of friction. So we decided it was time to make this easier.

Composer

Composer is our own monitoring-as-code configuration management tool. With the latest update, you can now manage OneAgent and ActiveGate updates directly from the platform, on your terms.

How It Works:

You don’t have to enable Dynatrace auto-updates and hope they align with internal policies. Instead, you stay firmly in control:

  • Choose the version you want

  • Select the hosts

  • Run updates when they fit your change window

Taking those steps will ensure that everything is visible and auditable in one place.

Why it Works:

This approach provides automation that still plays nicely with restricted environments. It's predictable, controlled, and fully traceable. This fits naturally with what Composer already aims to do for Dynatrace environments. The core idea has always been “monitoring-as-code”: something you can version, review, and roll back without panic when something goes wrong.

Safety and Auditability

  • Automated backups mean you can actually restore quickly instead of digging through old exports.

  • Version history lets you see exactly who changed what and when (which auditors tend to love).

  • Template-based deployments help you keep dev, test, and prod aligned without copy-paste mistakes or configuration drift.

  • Reporting eliminates most of the manual work associated with SLO and performance checks.

For organizations operating under strict regulations, this kind of middle ground is what really helps. You maintain governance, reduce the risk that comes with outdated agents, and give your teams time back to focus on more meaningful work instead of babysitting updates.

If Dynatrace auto-updates are not feasible in your environment, the new functionality is worth considering. It was built specifically for scenarios like yours. If you have any questions about Composer, our team at Performetriks will be happy to guide you. Contact us Today!
